Lab coders, the COVID-19 emergency has resulted in yet another new CPT® code you need to know.
The American Medical Association (AMA) announced the creation of proprietary lab analysis (PLA) code 0202U. The code applies to a nucleic acid respiratory pathogen panel that includes SARS-CoV-2 as one of the specified targets. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes COVID-19. BioFire® Respiratory Panel 2.1 is the name you’ll see associated with the test.
The code was effective May 20, 2020. To be sure you know how to use it, search 0202U on SuperCoder’s Code Connect to find the May special edition CPT® Assistant that discusses the code. The clinical example and procedure description will help you with proper use. The AMA has also made the special edition available to the public to support proper reporting during this time when lab testing and coding are evolving quickly.
