Updated COVID-19 Official Guidelines and Specimen Collection Codes on SuperCoder

Medical coding requirements for COVID-19 have been changing at a remarkably fast pace. Be sure you don’t miss these two recent updates, available now in your SuperCoder online coding package.

ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posted “ICD-10-CM Official Coding Guidelines for COVID-19 April 1, 2020-September 30, 2020.” New code U07.1 (COVID-19) became effective April 1, and these guidelines will help you apply the code correctly, and report exposures and screenings, as well.

You’ll find these guidelines on your Coder or Coding Tools page in the left menu. Select Coding/ICD-10-CM/Guidelines. The guidelines are also available on the CDC’s ICD-10-CM page.

COVID-19 code and modifier updates: A last-minute update to the April 2020 Alpha-Numeric HCPCS File included two new codes for clinical labs to identify specimen collection for COVID-19 testing. Modifier CS also got a revised descriptor. You can locate these options like any other active codes and modifiers on SuperCoder, such as by using the search box or the left-side menu (Coding/HCPCS).

Although these changes are in the April update file, they are effective on or after March 1, 2020:

  • G2023 (Specimen collection for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]), any specimen source)
  • G2024 (Specimen collection for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]), from an individual in a skilled nursing facility or by a laboratory on behalf of a home health agency, any specimen source)

CS (Cost-sharing for specified covid-19 testing-related services that result in an order for or administration of a covid-19 test)
