When to use code 28005 or 28820 for removal of bone because of osteomyelitis?

Jennifer Posted Thu 05th of May, 2016 09:33:41 AM
I have a podiatrist that has performed several procedures for removing diseased bone form either osteomyelitis or gangrene at first the code we choose was 28005, but more recently in reviewing her charges she does state that she is disarticulating the joint and removing the bone so would this be more of an amp code 28820? How do you decide which code is more appropriate? Thanks for your help

Hi, Amputation is a condition in which a part or all of the extremity is removed by trauma, surgery or medical illness. In this case there is osteomyelitis, in which diseased bone is removed. To differentiate between incision and amputation you have to go through the medical records to determine to which extent the bone was removed. Also, for disarticulation there are separate codes, which needs to be billed.
