What would be an appropriate ICD-9 code for animal bite/scratch?

Lori Posted Fri 07th of December, 2012 14:46:58 PM

We are a pediatrician's office and we had a patient who was attacked by a feral cat. We found an E- E906.5code but we cannot use this type of ICD-9 because we are pediatricians. What other code could we use for an animal bite? Thanks!

E codes are reported only as secondary diagnosis codes because they are supplemental codes. The primary diagnosis code could be 870.0–897.7 (wound, open) or 910–919 (superficial injury codes). The specific code reported would be based on the location of the wound. For example, 891.0 would be the appropriate code for an open wound on the lower leg without mention of complication. The secondary diagnosis code would be E906.5.It would not be reported on subsequent treatments.
