VNS insertion with analysis and programming

Deborah h Posted Thu 19th of March, 2015 10:45:47 AM

Are you allowed to code (95971-95975) with cpt code 64568 if it's the first time the stimulator is being implanted? or is the analysis and programming coded only after the stimulator has been implanted at a later time diff day other than during the same surgery session as the implantation?

I don’t see anything that it cannot be billed together, but reporting code 64568 (Incision for implantation of cranial nerve (eg, vagus nerve) neurostimulator electrode array and pulse generator) implies that the surgeon placed the electrode array and the pulse generator and the code series 95971-95975 Electronic analysis of implanted neurostimulator pulse generator system (eg, rate, pulse amplitude, pulse duration, configuration of wave form, battery status, electrode selectability, output modulation, cycling, impedance and patient compliance measurements), if the surgeon does programming or testing of the pulse generator- so due to common part between the codes, it may lead to denial.
