If a patient who is asymptomatic is coming in to receive a vaccine because they have been exposed to rabies. Is it appropriate to use Z23(primary) Encounter for Immunization w/ Z20.3 (as secondary) Contact w/and suspected exposure or just code w/Z20.3 by itself? Please advise. Thank you

Hello Jamie,

Thank you for your question.

The appropriate ICD-10-CM code for the above scenario will be Z20.3 (Contact with and (suspected) exposure to rabies) as the patient has come to receive a vaccine because of exposure to rabies.

Hope that helps!
