use of RT/LT modifiers with debridement codes

Deaconess Posted Thu 05th of January, 2017 11:50:29 AM
we have been seeing denials when submitting RT/LT with 97597/97598. Wondering if we should also not be using these modifiers on 11042-11047?

Debridement codes does not allow to use location modifiers.

97597/97598 is per session code and is not billable in multiple units per visit.

The debridement codes are based upon total aggregate size of wounds, so "RT" or "LT" and "T" modifiers no longer apply for those codes.

The use of the "RT/LT" is not necessary since the payment is not based on left or right anatomical treatment locations, but instead is based on total surface area treated.

Thank you!
