Use of modifiers 50, RT, and LT

George Posted Wed 01st of May, 2013 15:40:26 PM

I understand that no modifier is required if a cpt code is for a bilateral procedure. When is it appropriate to use RT and LT vs 50 for a unilateral cpt code? Are there any guidelines in place for the use of these modifiers?

I am referring to bilateral procedures only such as an xray that can not be coded with a bilateral code.
