Urology/Two Nephrectomies

Cherie Posted Wed 02nd of December, 2015 14:51:15 PM

My Dr. did a partial nephrectomy, then came back a week later to do a complete open nephrectomy including the entire ureter due to tumor was more involved then previously thought. Another Dr. assisting him w/ this procedure did a cysto procedure where he cut out the distal ureter from the bladder. Would I code 50234 for the second nephrectomy and code 52234 for the removal of the distal ureter from the bladder for the second Dr., or would this need to be done as co surgery? Please advise. Thank you.

Thanks for your query Cherie !

As there is no CCI conflicts for this code according to CCI data, we can code both procedures together only if you have diagnosis of bladder tumor or ureteral orifice tumor as well.

50234 Nephrectomy with total ureterectomy and bladder cuff; through same incision and
52234 Cystourethroscopy, with fulguration (including cryosurgery or laser surgery) and/or resection of; SMALL bladder tumor(s) (0.5 up to 2.0 cm)

But if the diagnosis is only of ureter tumor then you can query the physician for more details of cystoscopy procedure.

I hope this answers your query.
