urinary stones with hydronephrosis

Denise Posted Tue 26th of April, 2016 12:11:56 PM
CT scan - obstructing 5mm right renal pelvic stone with right hydronephrosis. According to my AMA ICD 10 coding book when I look under the tabular listing for hydronephrosis - with obstruction (by)(of) - renal calculus = N13.2 (also hydro with obstruction ureteral calculus also leads to N13.2) In an earlier posting it was stated that renal stone with hydro should be coded N20.0 and N13.30 because N13.2 states hydro with renal and ureteral calculous obstruction. It is my understanding that N13.2 is hydro with renal AND/OR ureteral calculous obstruction...could be renal or ureteral or both. What is the correct coding as I sure do code this a lot in in our urology clinic??

As per the case information given by you, there is a renal pelvic stone obstruction with hydronephrosis, therefore N13.2 seems appropriate for the given scenario. To answer the second part of your question, even I think it means renal or ureteral or both.
