Ulnar Polydactyly removal

Cheryl Posted Tue 06th of August, 2019 13:39:31 PM
My doctor removed two accessory fingers. One from each hand. CPT gives us code 26587 but states that if the specimen is soft tissue only then use code 11200. Since 11200 is for multiple skin tags up to 15 lesions and the path report showed only skin and cartilage would I only code 11200 once? A digit was removed from each hand and the modifier 50 is not on the approved modifier list for this code.

Hi,

Thank you for your question.

You can only report CPT 26587 if the surgeon excises the tissue and bone. Because your surgeon only excised soft tissue, you should instead report 11200 (Removal of skin tags, multiple fibrocutaneous tags, any area; up to and including 15 lesions) only once.
