Two Stents

Leorah Posted Tue 04th of June, 2019 06:13:40 AM
If our doctor placed 2 intracranial stents (37215) in the same territory. How do I code the second stent?

Hello Leorah,

Thank you for your question.

As per the above documentation, if the provider has placed 2 intracranial stents in the same territory, report only 1 unit of CPT® code 37215 (Transcatheter placement of intravascular stent(s), cervical carotid artery, open or percutaneous, including angioplasty, when performed, and radiological supervision and interpretation; with distal embolic protection), since, the MUE of the code is 1.

Note: As per CMS guidelines, the MUE of CPT® code is 1 and the MAI is 2, which means that this code can only be reported once per encounter.  MAI 2 indicates an absolute date of service (DOS) edit based on policy. CMS has not identified any instances in which exceeding a MAI 2 MUE is correct and payable.

Hope that helps!
