two partial nephrectomies/same kidney

Jennifer Posted Mon 11th of August, 2014 12:04:46 PM

Dr. did two partial nephrectomies- same kidney. I see no documentation indicating how to code in this circumstance. I am leaning toward 50543,50543-59 - insurance is BLUE SHIELD. Any insight on this ?

Code 50543 represents 'Laparoscopy, surgical; partial nephrectomy'.

You may only code additional unit of code 50543 with modifier 59 if provider has removed laproscope after first partial kidney removal and then he re-inserts the laproscope to remove another portion of the kidney.

In case, the provider removes one or more portions of kidney in same session through same laproscopic entry, then you should use only one unit of code 50543.

Thanks !!
