total hip exploration with resection iliopsoas tendon.

Sandra Posted Fri 26th of March, 2010 15:39:22 PM

My surgeon states in the op note: it appears that the iliospoas was not rubbing against the acetabuluar edge. He dissected around the back of the femur staying directly on bone and lifting the iliopsoas tendon off the lesser trochanter. He worked along the the neck of the femur, hip jt, entered brownish material- proximal portion of the femoral component had a sharp edge on it. It was prominent, was rubbing on iliopsoas. He completely released the iliospoas off femur. He did not revised THR. I looked at code 27097 but wasn't sure about sharp edge that he took care of if another code in addition to this or even if this is the correct code. Has anyone else come across this? thanks bev

The only CPT code I could come across is 27005 if the surgeon performs the Iliopsoas tendon release as an open procedure. But if he performs the surgery arthroscopically, you should report the unlisted-procedure code 29999 because no arthroscopic code properly describes the iliopsoas tendon release.
