Temporary pacemaker at time of heart cath

Super Posted Mon 27th of July, 2015 14:14:58 PM

Pt had cardiac arrest out side the hospital, was brought in, went urgently to cath lab for heart cath and multiple PCI's. Pt was also in complete heart block so a temporary pacemaker was inserted prior to the heart cath/pci. CCI edit says they can never be billed together. Is there a way the physician can be paid for this work?

No, Temporary pacemaker is considered included in the primary procedure when placed at the time of more complicated surgery. Here, in this case it is PCI. You cannot bill for temporary pacemaker separately until and unless, the temporary pacemaker was placed during the emergency condition till the time decision for surgery was made. For this kind of situations, you can bill it separately.
