Telemedicine Billing

Cristina Posted Tue 24th of March, 2020 18:09:02 PM
For a telemedicine new patient visit does the physician bill a new Paitent visit 99201-99205 with modifier 95 and place of service 02?

Hi Cristina,

Thanks for your question.

Append modifier 95 to an appropriate CPT code for a real time interaction between a physician or other qualified healthcare professional and a patient who is located at a distant site from the reporting provider. Codes to be reported must be listed in Appendix P.

New for 2017 is the place of service (POS) (02) for telehealth services. Use this place of service when telehealth services are being provided. Codes 99201–99215 are allowed and paid by CMS.

Please check with the individual payer for their specific policies and guidelines, and codes for which modifier 95 assignment is applicable. Some payers may require use of modifier GT, instead, so it is important to always check with the individual payer.

Please feel free to write if you have any question.

Thanks.
