Subdural tap

Sandra Posted Thu 09th of July, 2015 15:08:17 PM

What CPT code do I use when the surgeon did a Subdural tap through fontanelle/suture for an adult(not a Ventricular puncture)? The only code I come up with is 61000 but that is for an infant.

Well, for adult fontanelle fuses, it should be through suture only. it is also important to know for what purpose procedure has been done. For these kind of procedures it is require to make the way to go through skull, so you can use CPT code series 61140-61156 according to the documentation. Hope it helps!

The skull was partially remove so the surgeon did not go through the skull to do the subdural tap. Code is 61000 reflects what he did but that code is for infants. We need one for adults.

Ok. So in tat case you can use CPT 61108 if it done by twist drill or CPT 61154 if it is done by burr hole or CPT 61312 (supratentorial)/ CPT 61314 (infratentorial) if it done by craniectomy. Hope it helps!
