Strep Test Questions

Bernadette Posted Fri 30th of January, 2015 10:57:51 AM

Hello,

A patient comes in complaining about throat pain. The doctor examines and asks the nurse to run a strep test. The nurse performs the strep test and to document the order in the EHR she uses ICD-9 code 784.1. The test comes back negative. The doctor diagnoses the patient with ICD-9 code 462 - sore throat(NOS) viral. Would we bill the strep test with the 784.1 or 462 ICD-9 code? Please advise.
Thanks!

Thanks for your question.

Strep test should be coded with 462 Acute pharyngitis as 784.1 is a symptom and procedure should be billed with more specific and definitive available diagnosis.

Hope it helps resolve your query.

Thank you!
