Spine codes 72081-72084

Deb Posted Tue 23rd of May, 2017 08:30:05 AM
How would you code the following: A/P and Lateral cervical spine x-ray, A/P and Lateral thoracic spine x-ray and A/P, Lateral and oblique views of the lumbar spine? There is some confusion on how to interpret the use of codes 72081-72084. If 3 separate x-rays are taken of the c spine, t spine and l spine wouldn't they be coded separately - 72040,72070 and 72110? The description of codes 72081-72084 say "entire thoracic and lumbar". We are not taking views of the "entire" spine, we are doing each level separately.

Hi,

The better way to code the above x-ray is to bill it seperately If 3 separate x-rays are taken of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine with CPT 72040, 72070, and 72110. Also we should have seperate reports for each level taken. Hope it helps. Thank you.
