What is the difference between G47.8 and G47.9. What is a sleep disturbance vs a sleep disorder? I am fairly versed in sleep medicine and still cannot see the difference.

Hi Catherine,

The only difference in above codes is documentation in medical records.

There are different types of sleep disorders for which there are different ICD-10 codes, such as insomnia, hypersomnia, circadian rhythm sleep disorder, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, parasomnia, sleep related movement disorder. However, when provider mentions type of sleep disorder in medical records but that is different then the above mentioned disorders, for which there will be no ICD-10 code, in such scenario we will consider G47.8 (Other sleep disorders).

And when the provider mention sleep disorder but does not give the type of sleep disorder at all in medical records we will consider G47.9 (Sleep disorder, unspecified ). Hope it helps.
