Sentinel Lymph nodes and IHC

Christine Posted Mon 14th of October, 2019 09:53:12 AM
I have case where there were 2 separately identified sentinel lymph nodes were reported out. CK AE 1/3 was performed on each sentinel lymph node. Are we able to bill the 88342 for each of those?

Hello Christine,

Thank you for your question.

CPT® code 88342 states:  Immunohistochemistry or immunocytochemistry, per specimen; initial single antibody stain procedure.

Since, the code descriptor states, per specimen, and the above provided documentation indicates that two separately identified sentinel lymph nodes were examined through CK AE 1/3 method; so, reporting two units of CPT® code 88342 will be appropriate.

Hope that helps!
