We are billing 87633 for 12 espiratory pathogen testing .Can we also bill additional CPT codes for influenza 87502 ,RSV 87634 and enterovirus 87498 in addtion to 87633 or only 87633 is is suffice.

As per the CCI edits, you can only bill 87633 and 87498. CPT codes 87502 and 87634 are inclusive in CPT 87633.

As per the descriptor of CPT 87633 (Infectious agent detection by nucleic acid (DNA or RNA); respiratory virus (eg, adenovirus, influenza virus, coronavirus, metapneumovirus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus), includes multiplex reverse transcription, when performed, and multiplex amplified probe technique, multiple types or subtypes, 12-25 targets), it includes the testing of influenza virus and syncytial virus.

Thank You for the reply. 87633 Also includes enterovirus ( Rhinovirus ). As Rhinoviruses belong to the genus Enterovirus in the family Picornaviridae hence we should we not be coding 87633 alone.

If you are testing for rhinovirus than only CPT 87633 will be coded. As per the descriptor of CPT 87633, it is specific to rhinovirus type.
