Revision right hip hemiarthroplasty

Kelly Posted Tue 22nd of December, 2015 16:48:28 PM

Hello,

Dr. writes that he performed a 'revision right hip hemiarthroplasty'. Can you help me find a code for this? I have looked into 27134, 27137, 27138, but am not sure what to choose from his description.

Thank you

Hi,
Can you please send us the details of the procedure, i.e. whether the femoral or acetabular component was treated.

The provider just told me it was for the femoral component, which would make the code 27138, but it was a revision of a partial hip and not a total hip. Would I add a 52 modifier for reduced services? Thank you.

As mentioned only the femoral component was treated during 'revision right hip hemiarthroplasty' we can use the code 27138 without any modifier. You can refer web for scholarly articles which states that during hemiarthroplasty of hip only femoral component of the hip joint is treated. Hence, in total hip arthroplasty if only femoral component is treated, we will code for hemiarthroplasty.
