Revision of a Cranial Wound

Sandra Posted Fri 06th of July, 2018 11:29:45 AM
What CPT code would I use for a revision of a cranial wound where the surgeon needs to explore and/or repair a cranial screw?

Hi, Sandra,

It is a wound revision case with repair of a cranial screw.

We will report this case as complex repair between code range (13120-13122, 13160) depending upon rest of your documentation. The repair you describe qualifies as a complex repair.

Complex repairs involve more than layered closure, such as extensive undermining, stents, screws, or retention sutures. Complex repairs may be reconstructive and include creating a defect to be repaired (for instance, scar excision with subsequent closure).

The documentation should state that the surgeon corrected a defect or performed extensive tissue debridement.
