Resection of the lateral cutaneous nerve

Teresa Posted Wed 24th of February, 2016 21:37:13 PM

Our doc recently did a release of the lateral cutaneous nerve (incision was made in the anterior/superior spine of anterior hip/groin region) and also resected a portion of nerve which was then sent to pathology...........diagnosis is meralgia paresthetica, R leg (G57.11)

Appropriate code would be 64714(Neuroplasty, major peripheral nerve, arm or leg, open; lumbar plexus)

And just to clarify, this code would include the resection of a small portion of the lateral cutaneous nerve? (which was sent to pathology?)

If the doctor has removed any mass while relieving the nerve, then there is an appropriate code 64774(Excision of neuroma; cutaneous nerve, surgically identifiable). This code does not bundle into the previous code and can be billed together.
Please refer to the operative notes for more clarification.

The doctor is not removing a mass. He just resects a portion of the nerve and sends it off to pathology. Again there is no mention of a mass or neuroma.

CPT code 64714 is appropriate for this condition. As it includes external neurolysis and nerve transposition as well.
