Repeat 52240

Maria Posted Wed 27th of August, 2014 16:20:58 PM

If our doctor re-resect a prostate within 6 months of the original 52240 surgery, can we bill 52240 again? Is 52240-79 the correct code? Please help. Thank you.

I believe that the global days period for this code is usually 90 days. And, if you have performed the repeated surgery within six months however beyond 90 days, you may again bill this code. Also, you need not to append modifier 79.

In case it was repeated within 90 days of the original surgery, you may bill code 52240 by appending modifier 78, Unplanned return to the operating or procedure room by the same physician following initial procedure for a related procedure during the post-operative period.

Thanks !!
