Repair of Popliteal Aneurysm

Angel Posted Wed 03rd of July, 2019 16:46:32 PM
Hello, I need help understanding how to code an aneurysm repair of the popliteal artery. It was coded as 37236 but denied for medical necessity. According to the LCD the popliteal artery is not covered under the LCD. I think the code is wrong because the description states "except lower extremity artery for occlusive disease." I don't think 35151 is correct as it states direct repair and this would be an open procedure. Access to CFA was obtained with micropuncture system. We imaged the right popliteal artery and this showed findings consistent with popliteal artery aneurysm. The artery was terribly homogenous in size as far as Hunters' canal down to down below the knee popliteal artery. I place a 8x10 endoprothesis and extended it with an 8x5 endoprothesis.

Hi,

Provided documentation does not clearly indicate the procedures that were performed on the billed date of service.

Use CPT code 37224 for endovascular revascularization, (open or percutaneous) popliteal artery(s), unilateral; with transluminal angioplasty. If atherectomy was also performed along with angioplasty in the same vessel, use CPT code 37225. If stent placement was performed along with angioplasty in the same vessel, use CPT code 37226. If transluminal stent placement along with atherectomy and angioplasty was performed within the same vessel, use CPT code 37227.

Thanks
