Repair of mandible fracture

Marla Posted Mon 23rd of February, 2015 14:02:35 PM

'How would you code for repair of a mandible fracture when the operative note reads: "The patient will be placed into maxillary mandibular fixation for treatment of his mandibular fracture". That was all he did to treat the mandibular fracture. He did other surgeries to repair other fractures but that was the only treatment for his mandible fracture. I am looking at CPT code 21440? Would this be appropriate. This CPT code does NOT bundle into the other procedures performed at the same time so it should be separately payable.'CPT code 21497 is for interdental wiring but for a condition other than fracture so I didn't think that was the correct code since this was an actual fracture.

The provider in the above description has used fixation device. You may look at codes 21452 and 21453.

21452 represents 'Percutaneous treatment of mandibular fracture, with external fixation'.

21453 represents 'Closed treatment of mandibular fracture with interdental fixation'.

Thanks !!
