Repair laceration of vastus lateralis muscle.

Margaret Posted Wed 26th of August, 2015 13:40:08 PM

Patient sustained multiple trauma to lower extremity with a circular saw. I am having trouble finding the correct CPT codes for the following repairs:
1. Repair of vastus lateralis muscle LACERATION.
2. Repair of quadriceps tendon LACERATION.
3. Repair of iliotibial band LACERATION.
4. Repair of lateral meniscus LACERATION.
5. Repair of knee traumatic arthrotomy which I believe is an open injury to a joint.

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm just not sure what codes to use.

1. Repair of vastus lateralis muscle LACERATION = 27385.
2. Repair of quadriceps tendon LACERATION = 27385.
3. Repair of iliotibial band LACERATION.
4. Repair of lateral meniscus LACERATION = 27403
5. Repair of knee traumatic arthrotomy which I believe is an open injury to a joint = 27310 -52 modifier, as joint was already opened.

Thank you so much. Greatly appreciate the help. The iliotibial band laceration, is that included in one of the other ones?

Margaret Posted Thu 27th of August, 2015 12:04:37 PM

Sorry to bother you again but my supervisor is questioning using these repair codes for LACERATION and not "TEAR or RUPTURE". The diagnosis codes I'm using are from the 'Sprain and Strain' section of ICD9 and under includes it indicates "laceration" but she doesn't think that also stands for the repair procedures. Can you further clarify this.

Thank you.

If its pure laceration injury during any trauma, report normal complex repair codes 13121 and 13122 on the basis of size of suture line.
