Removal of the spinous process distractor

Cheryl Posted Wed 12th of February, 2020 15:16:01 PM
My doctor removed two spinous process distractor (x-stop) devices. After doing much research I have been led to many different codes and advice on coding this. It was performed during a four level decompression. (63047, 63048 x3). I do not believe there is an exact code for the removal of the devices and no new devices/instrumentation were placed. I have considered codes 22850 since it is non -segmental but it has an MUE of 1 and two devices were removed. I have also considered 20680 or if no other code then the unlisted 22899. What code would be best in this situation?

Hello Cheryl,

Thank you for your question.

The X-STOP is a two-compartment assembly titanium implant that fits between the spinous processes of the lower lumbar spine. A surgeon can perform this procedure on one or two lumbar segments. There is no specific CPT code for removal of the spinous process distractor (x-stop) removal. You are advised to report an unlisted CPT code 22899 (Unlisted procedure, spine) for the above procedure.
