removal of epidural abscess

Cari Posted Thu 10th of May, 2012 13:31:31 PM

Dr. did L3 to S1 redo decompressive laminectomy for removal of epidural abscess. Also Bilateral L5 and S1 foraminotomies.
How would this be coded?

The single code, 63267 (Laminectomy for excision or evacuation of intraspinal lesion other than neoplasm, extradural; lumbar), describes the evacuation of the epidural abscess via laminectomy exposure regardless of the number of laminectomies performed. It is appropriate to report this code once, not in multiple units, for the procedure you describe. Foraminotomies would be considered inclusive to the procedure since in L5 and S1 63267 is also performed.
