Deborah h Posted Mon 23rd of February, 2015 14:16:53 PM

What would be the cpt code and diagnosis code for a removal of JP drain with exploration of craniotomy wound.

Deborah h Posted Mon 23rd of February, 2015 14:28:06 PM

This was done during post op period after craniotomy.

Hello,

Thanks for your question, as per NCCI chapter # 1 removal of drain and wound exploration is not separately codable during post-op period.

Thanks.

I thought that you could charge for the removal if there was complications in removing it, and the patient had to be taken to surgery. Can you code 10121-78?

Yes, if complication is clearly documented and patient had to return to the operative room, you can bill removal.

Thanks.
