Rectosigmoid resection with anastomotic rings received separately

Vicki Posted Wed 25th of September, 2013 12:03:07 PM

Can you bill "88305" for anastomotic rings and "88309" for resection?
Specimens were received in separate containers.

88309-Codes required to document patient has colorectal cancer and received a colorectal cancer resection surgical pathology examination

and also 88305 for anastomotic rings

My question is "88305" anastomotic rings included in the "88309" or can we bill separately because specimans came in separate containers? We have a pathologists that says it is included and should not be billed separately and the other says it should be billed seperately?

The current CCI do allow these codes to bill separately.
