Reanastamosis of cranial nerve XI

Natalie Posted Tue 04th of June, 2013 20:44:21 PM

Unfortunately, the surgeon tells me that none of that series of codes applies, because he did a REanastamosis of the nerve. I suggested billing 64866 with a modifier -22 and attaching the operative report, or do you suggest billing an unlisted code and sending the operative report. Either way, I am sure the surgeon won't be happy, but a code just does not exist for a reanastamosis of cranial nerve XI.

You are correct , there is no code to describe this procedure. I would prefer using an unlisted code here rather than the modifier 22. The OP should be well documentation of extra work done and payor may not get satisfied too with the reason. Use unlisted and compare it with 64866 rather.
