re do procedure

Stacy Posted Sun 08th of June, 2014 21:20:23 PM

if a patient has excision and has to return the next day because the stiches came out how can this be coded? The provider used cpt code 12020 with 873.59, but I believe this is incorrect.

Does the documentation state that only a suture repair was done?
12020 Treatment of superficial wound dehiscence; simple closure, would not be correct.
What was the original procedure code for the excision? If there is a global period this may not be billable, otherwise it may be a post op code. Please let me know more information and I can certainly help.
873.59 would not be correct either. My suggestion would be the diagnosis code that prompted the excision...without more information it is hard to say exactly what the diagnosis would be...was it simply the stitches came out or did something cause them to come out?

Thank you and I will watch for your response.
