radiology coding 72082-72084

Janet Posted Tue 04th of February, 2020 16:12:19 PM
I have question about the new 72082-72084 X-ray entire spine, thoracic and lumber, including cervial spine, skull and sacrum if performed. If they shoot the films like this: AP thoracic, lateral thoracic, AP lumbar, thoracic lumber, would it billed as a 4 view exam? I have found conflicting information on this. I thought it would still be a 2 view since it is AP and lateral but I have seen a lot of other information that indicates it would be 4 views.

Hi Janet,

Thanks for your question.

Please note that your documentation states the two views of thoracic spine i.e. AP and Lateral. In the same way, there is also documentation saying AP lumbar, thoracic lumber.  By saying “thoracic lumbar”, we assume you mean to say, “Lateral lumbar”. There are only two views i.e. AP and lateral for both thoracic and lumbar.

Code 72082 says “Radiologic examination, spine, entire thoracic and lumbar, including skull, cervical and sacral spine if performed (e.g., scoliosis evaluation); 2 or 3 views”. This code is for entire thoracic and lumbar. So, we suggest you to report this code once for 2 views and not 4 views.

Please feel free to write if you have any question.

Thanks.
