Programming a shunt system

Deborah h Posted Thu 02nd of April, 2015 20:06:45 PM

Please let me know when you are able to charge for programming a shunt system and list the cpt codes that are affiliated with the programming codes.

CPT 2001 added 62252 for reprogramming of programmable CSF shunt. The reprogrammable shunt allows noninvasive pressure adjustments to correct over- or underdrainage of CSF. According to CPT Changes 2001: An Insider's View, published by the AMA, 62252 includes reprogramming of the shunt" and the confirmation of the changes made to the pressure setting" and should be "reported one time only for each encounter and is not reported separately for different settings during the same encounter.

What I was asking is example cpt code 64568 can be billed with programming codes 95971, 95974, 95975......can 62223 or what other cpt codes can be billed with these programming codes.

CPT code 62223 represents Creation of shunt; ventriculo-peritoneal, -pleural, other terminus and CPT code 95970-95982 represents Electronic analysis of implanted neurostimulator pulse generator system of different different type of neurostimulator depending upon the area of implantation.

Electronic analysis of neurostimulator can only be performed when neurostimulator is implanted or reprogrammed, etc.

No, you cannot use CPT codes for Electronic analysis of neurostimulator with Shunt system only.
