When a patient is seen for a screening that ends up as a diagnostic procedure do you use modifier 33 and modifier Pt for medicare? Also do you use modifier 33 for screenings that turn diagnostic on all other insurances? Thanks for any help you can give on this subject.

This is for a screening colonoscopy.

Yes I do. Many commercial carriers do not have a clue and reject claims, but others do. I suggest you contact all your carriers and verify this. As a standard, I code these modifiers as applicable.
