Preventative codes for labs

Tammy Posted Thu 23rd of February, 2017 14:41:19 PM
Hello, patients in particular were seen for annual visits at the OB/GYN office. During those visits, routine labs were ordered and drawn. The labs are things such as: CBC, TSH, comprehensive metabolic panel, lipid panel. The code being used is: Z13.9 – Screening for condition. When patients have received a bill and upon calling their insurance companies, they are asking that we change our code to a “preventative code” so the labs are covered. My understanding is that there isn’t a preventative code. Can you share any information you may have regarding this? what would be the appropriate dx for preventative labs? thx

ICD10 CM codes vary as per the type of the screening performed. There are different ICD 10 codes for different screenings.

For encounter for general adult medical examination without abnormal findings use ICD 10 code Z00.00

For encounter for general adult medical examination with abnormal findings, use ICD 10 code Z00.01

Use appropriate ICD 10 code Z00.00 or Z00.01 for routine general annual screening visits. Visit will include (annual) (physical) and any associated laboratory and radiologic examinations.
