Deborah h Posted Wed 30th of September, 2015 11:20:12 AM

Please let me know how you would code a posterior occipital cervical 1 and cervical 3 fusion. Sub occipital plate was position using 6 mm screws. The rods extended from the sub occipital area to C3.

Also, please list the code for the trinity material bone fusion material that was used over the abraded bone.

Thanks for your question.

Code this scenario with CPT
22590-Arthrodesis, posterior technique, craniocervical (occiput-C2)
22600-Arthrodesis, posterior or posterolateral technique, single level; cervical below C2 segment
Use CPT 22840/22842 for instrumentation as per documentation.
Use CPT code for 20930/20931 for trinity material bone fusion as per documentation.

Would you code for the plate? If so, what code. If the procedure done at C1 and C2; what code would you use 22840 or 22842?

Deborah h Posted Thu 01st of October, 2015 09:36:57 AM

Also, would you code 22326 too?

SuperCoder Answered Mon 05th of October, 2015 01:33:54 AM

Hi Deborah,

No, we will not use any additional code for plate because when we are doing instrumentation by rod, plate or wire, we are using instrumentation code only and if the procedure at C1 and C2 level, we will use CPT code 22840.

CPT 22326 is not appropriate for this scenario.
