Post-op visit after endoscopic sinus surgery

Melissa Posted Mon 13th of January, 2020 13:56:41 PM
Hello, Our ENT physician performed endoscopic sinus surgery 31267,31254 and 31256 on a patient and the patient returned for several more post op visits. At each of these visits he wants to bill an E&M (99213) as well as 31237 stating that its not bundled because there are no global days. I know there are zero global days with the FESS , but 99213 is a column 2 code for 31237, so I would think that unless there is a separate reason for the office visit, we would only be able to bill for 31237 at the follow up. Is that correct?

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for your question.

This is correct that codes 31267 and 31254 do not have a global period. So, it is appropriate to report E/M services for follow up visits only. But if an endoscopy is also performed during the follow up visit, then E/M should not be reported unless there is a separate reason for the office visit. Hence, you are absolutely correct to report only endoscopy.
