post op follow up ultrasound for vein procedures

Geri Posted Wed 30th of January, 2019 18:14:31 PM
Needing clarification on the coding for the post op follow up ultrasound code to use following vein procedures. 76970 vs 93971. The cpt book describes 93971 as unilateral or limited but does not specify follow up or post op whereas 76970 description is follow up ultrasound. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks for your question.

In code 76970, the provider performs a subsequent ultrasound study, or US scan after an ultrasound was done and he wants to reexamine the same area, such as after therapy or another procedure is done. Therefore, for followup ultrasound the description supports code 76970.

Hope this helps.
