Port placement (36561) Within Global Period of Surgery for Malignant Neoplasm

Kathy Posted Thu 03rd of December, 2015 15:38:18 PM

What is the best modifier to use when our provider is billing a Port placement (36561) within the global period for surgery the SAME provider performed, for malignant neoplasm, such as Colon CA? The new procedure is not a complication of the colon surgery, but is for the same diagnosis. Would a -79, be appropriate?

Please explain why & site references. Thank you.

As per guidelines, if the device is inserted in relation to the primary procedure (surgery for colon CA) as a staged procedure, then use modifier 58. If it is unplanned return to the OT in relation to the primary procedure, use modifier 78. As mentioned that it is not related to the primary procedure, modifier 79 is appropriate to use for unrelated procedure during post-op period.
