Placement of right VP shunt connected via T-connector to existing left VP shunt

Deborah h Posted Wed 20th of May, 2015 11:50:50 AM

In this procedure it doesn't appear that the value was replace, but that a T-connector was inserted between the reservoir and shunt value. Would this procedure be coded 62230, 62225-51 or 62258 (note the VP shunt was not removed) or 62223. Please also give supporting documentation to your answer.

CPT code 62223 should be the code of choice. The provider creates a shunt, or tube, leading from the ventricles of the brain to the abdominal cavity, pleural cavity, or other terminus, meaning another location to drain. Providers perform the procedure to treat diseases, such as hydrocephalus, where the ventricles enlarge with CSF and to drain CSF to another area of the body.
