Place of Service Question (ER or Inpatient)

Nicole Posted Thu 16th of February, 2017 11:00:55 AM
What is the appropriate Place of Service code for a patient that comes into the Emergency Room and taken to the OR for an emergency procedure and then Admitted directly after. Would the correct POS be ER or Inpatient? We are running into issues if the POS should be Inpatient and the patient has an HMO (i.e. BCN) that requires and authorization, but the hospital does not obtain one because the patient was ER status.

Hi,

The place of service will be Inpatient. With an HMO plan, the patient needs a referral before he/she can see any other health care professional, except in an emergency.
