Pay for total thyroidectomy and a parathyroid exploration

SuperCoder Answered Wed 21st of April, 2010 07:18:05 AM

Has anyone ever been able to get a total thyroidectomy and a parathyroid exploration paid for at same operative session? Especially when the patient has two separate diagnoses - multinodular goiter and a parathyroid adenoma?? Have tried different modifiers but have not had any luck.

Total thyroidectomy and a parathyroid exploration are not paid together, because the CCI edit bundles the parathyroid exploration with all of the thyroidectomy codes, such as 60240. So in this case you can only code for total thyroidectomy.
