Patient seen 2 times same day by same provider in office

Cheryl Posted Tue 13th of July, 2010 15:57:49 PM

If patient seen in the am and brought back in the pm seen by same provider and has iv fluids and ultrasound do you combine the 2 E/M visits and code level according then the iv's and u/s? I know you can't bill 2 separate visits.

Thank you

Yes, you are correct you won't get the reimbursement for 2 E/M codes together but only for a single code (i.e. combination of 2 E/M). So you need to bill accordingly with a E/M code and IV + U/s.

Did the patient come back for the same reason? If not then you can bill with modifier 25 using new dx.

You can also use modifier UF; "services provided in the morning" for the morning appt. and modifier UH "services provided in the afternoon"
(i.e., 99213-UF 724.2; 99213-UH with add'l dx's) or you can just bill a higher level 99214 or 99215.
