Patient had a retinal tear following cataract surgery.

Donna Posted Thu 12th of December, 2013 10:20:20 AM

One of our cataract surgeons did cataract surgery on a patient. During post op period after cataract surgery patient developed a retinal tear. Our retina specialist did a PRP in our office. Do I need a special modifier to bill for the repair?

Yes, use modifier -24 on the PRP code.

I THOUGHT 24 MODIFIER WAS ONLY FOR E&M CODES

When a cataract surgery is performed and followed by a PRP within 90 days, append modifier 79 to the PRP.

I apologize for the earlier answer. Thanks for bringing this into notice.

Happy New Year.
