patient expires during surgery

Melissa Posted Mon 23rd of June, 2014 15:55:03 PM

How do I correctly code anesthesia services for a patient who was undergoing a bowel resection and after 1 1/2 hours they expire during the procedure? would I code for the surgery 00840 and 560.9 and then add code 995.4? would I need a modifier?

Yes, 00840 is the correct anesthesia code to be billed for anesthesia service provided during bowel resection. You need not to append any special modifier other than anesthesia modifiers (AA, QX, QY) that indicates who has performed the anesthesia.

For ICD codes, please provide the diagnoses mentioned by the providers in the documentation.

Thanks !!
