Patient brought through ER, expires in ICU after procedures in cath lab. Dr. arranges all documentation for death certificate etc. I understand this is usually billed as 99293 (discharge) Can this be billed on the same day as the patient was admitted? Charges were denied. Can you charge admission and discharge in the case of death on the same calendar day?
"Medicare has also made it clear that you may bill discharge codes when you pronounce a death. To do so, however, you must be the physician who actually makes the pronouncement and you must have had a face-to-face encounter with the patient. You may bill that discharge service only on the date of the actual death. - See more at: http://www.todayshospitalist.com/index.php?b=articles_read&cnt=1280#sthash.6gGgZoy0.dpuf"

Thanks for your question. As per the guidelines, you may not bill the discharge code on same day as admission if patient deceased on the same day.
You may only bill initial inpatient paediatric critical care code 99471.
